Types of Child Custody Explained
There are two main types of custody: legal custody (who makes decisions about education, healthcare, religion) and physical custody (where the child lives).
Both can be sole (one parent) or joint (shared).
Joint legal custody is the most common outcome — courts prefer both parents to be involved in major decisions. Physical custody arrangements range from 50/50 equal time to primary residence with one parent and visitation for the other. Courts always apply the 'best interests of the child' standard..
